Drawing hands =o

1. What was it like using your hand as subject matter for a drawing?
• It was kind of cool. I liked it because it’s something I know so well and I thought I’d easily be able to perfect, but it turns out it wasn’t and it took a lot of time to perfect.
2. What media did you select - pencil or charcoal? Why?
• I chose to use a pencil because I don’t have charcoal. Generally I choose pencils over charcoal because it’s a little easier for me to control.
3. How did it feel to create a drawing with your non-dominant hand?
• Creating the drawing with my non-dominant hand was really a challenge. I thought it was funny because it’s a feeling that Im not used to at all. I enjoyed it because it definitely made me laugh and try harder.
4. Compare and contrast your final drawings. Do you think they are successful studies?
• It shows which hand my drawing is better with >.<
5. Would you consider using your non-dominant hand to create artwork in the future?
• Not unless my life or grade depended on it. It was such a challenge although fun I must say I am not a fan of my work. I like the outcome it came out way better than I expected. Drawing with my left hand made me concentrate a lot more as well.

Week 9

1.       Albrecht Durer: Image of Master

·         I chose this film because of its name/Title. Also because I wanted to know more of the “master”.  I also wanted to hear the proper pronunciation of “Durer”. Albrecht Durer was one of the greatest artists during the Northern Renaissance. This may be because his family pushed him and gave him motivation. He traveled to Italy and from his travel he became a landscape artist and was very aware of his works' form and perspective. I think the video did a great job, although it related to the text as always it went into greater detail. This time more than others because the text doesn’t say much about Durer

2.       Leonardo DaVinci : The mind of the renaissance

·         I chose this video because it’s an artist that I’m familiar with.  The video began by talking about Leonardo DaVinci was very talented, even as a child. He showed early signs of being gifted and even became an apprentice. I was aware that he was nicknamed the Renaissance man but I didn’t know he studied so many subjects, compared to many other artists. There is also a joke based on Leonardo DaVinci well not based but it makes fun of him, because he’s known for not finishing the many things he starts. Although in his defense the pieces he does complete turn out to be masterpieces.

3.       The Drawings of Michelangelo

·         I also chose this video because I was familiar with the artist. This video was intriguing because It not only spoke about his work but also his private life. The text only shows examples of his work, while the video gives inside details about his life and the meanings behind his work.  According to the video, he was a bit of a perfectionist. It’s not entirely a bad thing because in some of his sketches, his sculpting knowledge would kick in. Im not sure if that makes sense but the skills he used for his sculptures were evident in his sketches. I believe Michelangelo is a great artist because he uses what he is given and he can incorporate his life into his work. He was also good at making his sculptures look extremely realistic.

4.       Velazquez

·         I chose to watch this video because I don’t really know much about it. The first thing I learned from watching this is Velazquez isn’t a it, he’s an artist. He’s a painter that created art work for and based on King Philip the Fourth. He like many other artist was inspired by myriad other artist. I found this video to be the most boring of all, perhaps its because I knew a little about each of the other artist prior to watching the videos. He was a great painter who was able to capture emotions in his artwork. This isn’t a rare quality but it is challenging. He painted what he really saw other then what we wanted to see. I liked this video although it was slightly boring.

week 8

1. I selected this video the same way I always select a video, by name. I picked the three that seemed the most appealing. Like “Cairo Museum”, my boyfriend’s family is from Cairo and I always like finding out things about it. The illuminated Manuscript made me think of the Illuminati. The measure of all things: Greek art and human figure intrigued me because I like the human figure.

1. 2.       All of the videos related to the text Living With Art. Each video not only discussed points that were made in the text but also went into debt on each topic. The video’s helped me better understand the text and also answered some questions I may have had.

1. 3.       Although the video was very informative, I found it slightly boring. I think I found it boring because of the text that I recent read the two together are a bit repetitive. I will say that I did learn from it though. Each video is just a better explanation of what was read in the book.

1. 4.       For each video the key concepts I’ve learned were

•         More human than human- Symbols and unrealistic images are important to us. In art humans are always drawn differently then we actually appear.

•      Cairo Museum- Egypt has a really advanced civilization. The museum has an extraordinary collection of artifacts, King Tuts treasures. This museum holds many of Egypts precious history.

•    A world inscribed, Illuminated Manuscript- I didn’t learn new concepts. But the video told you that illuminated also means illustrated. It also talked about the production of books and manuscript.

•     The measure of all things: Greek and Human figure- Views of Cycladic sculpture and Koiros statues demonstrate an evolving realism, idealized human figures and ancient obsessions with the body

Video Reviews

Architecture: The science of design

• This video taught me thought architecture is a special form of art which also includes science and technology. I learned about the different components that go into it. I also learned well not really but it touched on the fact that location and environment influence an architects decision. In the book it also mentioned that architects use the environment to choose materials and such. I thought the video was a little boring but it did teach me more about the relation of architecture and technology.

Praire Style

• This video was about Frank Lloyd Wright. It has to do with the book because it went more in depth about his opinion on organic architecture. I never really paid attention to architecture more or less organic architecture. I was very intrigued by his design which followed the sun. I was also intrigued that Wright didnt finish High School because it seems that alot of people who are famous for their work didnt continue high school or college and they make it rather far in life. Almost as though College/ High school is a waste of time.

Classical Architecture

• All of the videos related to the book in one way or another but I believe this video did a great job. I like that although solar power is Green Architecture it isnt new. I had a feeling but the video just confirmed it. It also showed the great architecture of  Greece and how Greek and Romen architects influenced Modern architects. For example the archs used in modern buildings. 

Last call for Planet Earth

• I chose to watch this video because of the name, it sounded interesting. it talked about creating energy efficient buildings. I am also happy I chose this video because I am all for going green I try to do as much as I can for saving the environment. People don't usually take into consideration that what their doing is harming our environment.I learned many techniques that can be used in green architecture, such as windows, solar energy, and underfloor heating or cooling. I really hope more modern architects take this form of architecture into consideration.

Instalation Art

Installation art is artwork that changes a viewers perception of an area. It makes a person more comfortable in their space of work. The types of materials used in installation art actually varies. Almost any media can be incorporated in installations. They consist of everyday and natural things.The type of installation ranges depending on the place/ space/ area it is being used on. Installation art is good to make because it can easily transform an area into something more incredible. It can also create a more comfortable environment. It can make people want to revisit the place over and over. I found Yayoi Kusama the most intriguing I liked her style of work. I would actually decorate my room with some of her work.

I did find a piece that I feel a connection with. It's a turtle shaped - piggy bank that my boyfriend made. The theme I believe I want to explore is immersive virtual reality. I will be using

• my digital camera
• desk space
• laptop

This installation will be located in my room because this is where I spend my time when I want to hide out from everyone or when I want to just get some work done.

The turtle was my installation art. Whenever I look at it it makes me think of being in my boyfriends arms. The day it was made we went to a pottery place and we actually got into a mini argument (because we're both stubborn) Then at the end of the day we ended up putting secret I love you notes on our finished pieces. I know this may seem like a weird love movie or something but I really love my boyfriend and whenever I see the turtle I instantly blush. I keep it on the desk along with the two tin bottles. I'm not sure why I love the way it fits there. And the tomato is random I won it in a cooking competition this week and I left it there >.< The pictures are things that I colored and put up because I love making things and using my hands its really fun. So my desk is actually my area of escape because I surround it with things I love and things that keep me comfortable. I think if more students did this they wouldn't have such a hard time sitting at their desk =p

2. When looking at Project #1: (Elements and Principles), did you agree with the element or principle the artist listed with the images? Did you see other elements and principles in the images?

• For both blogs I agreed with both of the pictures listed along with their element. There was one picture in blog 1 < value> I would have placed that as shape or color or variety for that matter. It could have been either. But I understand why they chose value. I especially loved the underwater pictures from Kimberly's blog, I would have placed those as value.

3. When looking at Project #2: Where there any images in the Peer Blogs the same as your own? If yes, what were they? Where the reasons the image was selected the same or different as your own?

• Unfortunately I was unable to do this project < personal reasons> If I did that they both have used a piece of artwork by Andy Warhol. He is my favorite artist and I would have most definitely chose his artwork. The reasons were similar to mine in addition to my favoritism. 

4. Where there any images that your Peers selected that pique your interest now? If yes, what are they and what is your connection with them? What would you want to know about them?

• For project one yes. The underwater pictures all pique my interest. Also the picture of the waterfall. I am in love with water overall so they are my favorites of all. 

5. What do you think about  the process of reading your peers reflection? Do you find this to be a valuable in your learning?

• It is valuable. It gives us a chance to see how others think. It also gives us a chance to to compare our artwork/projects etc. I think it should be done more in the future. Also it may motivate more students to work harder if they knew their peers would be reviewing it on a weekly basis.

• I only did one project and I didn't receive any comments.

New Logo ...For myself

Creating this logo was fun. It made me really think about what I would want representing me, or at least that would make me think of me. It was a shock that we were being asked to create one for ourselves. I generally thought we would be creating one for a company or something but its better that it's for ourselves, I think more thought goes into it.

I had an idea of what I wanted for the logo I just didnt know how I would incorporate each idea into this one symbol. I tried a few ideas and brainstormed but it didnt work much. I liked the actual symbol but it wasn't quite right. Then I eliminated the outer circle and that worked out quite well because this is supposed to represent me and I don't really like being held in or surrounded. so I took out the outer circle and instantly I was satisfied.

This would be my symbol without the outer circle and the second part that completes it. The first symbol represents balance and its also sort of a peace sign for me. I got this idea from a gift that I received when I went to France so it actually means a lot to me and I'm very glad I could use it as part of my logo. The second symbol is the Japanese character for water.  I am a swimmer, and the water is where I find my tranquility. My absolute favorite place to be is under water, friends and family are convinced I'm a mermaid >.< The owrds under it "Respira Profundo" means breathe deeply in spanish. I am not spanish but I take a very high interest in the language and culture. I chose breathe deeply because I tend to overreact lol or even breathe for that matter. All of these things characterize me and Im glad I was able to incorporate them all into one thing that suits me. In a way I discovered myself, or how to describe myself without using words..

From watching the powerpoint, videos, etc I learned that creating logos are not as easy as it appears to be. Nor is creating a new design for a company. It definitely takes a lot of effort, but in the end it's all worth it because this will be what the company/ organization will be recognized by. Its not something you can just throw together nor is it something that can be easily changed. I found the logo video a bit boring but very informative, it actually guided me with mine. The video about redesigning the bottle was very intriguing and I was actually happy that the people came up with a solution for the extra drizzle and the consumers were satisfied in the end.
